Spin the Block

Think about the last time you hosted a big gathering, maybe Thanksgiving or a summer cookout. You know how much work goes into it. You curate the menu with intention, making sure there’s something for the carnivores, the pescatarians, and the vegans. You rearrange the furniture to create a communal atmosphere where people can connect. You might even create a guest list designed to cross-pollinate relationships, bringing different circles of friends together. From the appetizers to the centerpiece on the table, every detail is a labor of love, an expression of your desire for your guests to feel welcomed and have an incredible experience.

This level of intentionality is something we admire, but it’s not always how we operate. Too often, we slap things together, defaulting to what’s easy or convenient. We order a few party pizzas and call it a day, forgetting the power of a thoughtfully prepared space. We become so used to surviving that we forget we are on assignment. Our homes, our relationships, and our resources can feel like burdens to manage rather than gifts to be stewarded for a greater purpose. We settle for casual get-togethers when we could be cultivating life-changing community.

In his parable of the great supper, Jesus introduces us to a man who models this spirit of excellence. This isn't just any meal; it's a 'great supper,' indicating a lavish, generous, and meticulously planned event. The host hasn't just ordered takeout; he's prepared a feast with no expense spared. He's envisioned his guests enjoying the finest foods, the best entertainment, and a beautiful environment. This man represents God, and the supper represents His invitation into the Kingdom. It's not a last-minute thought or a casual affair. God's invitation is personal, generous, and overflowing with intentionality.

God is the ultimate thoughtful host. He hasn’t just thrown a party; He has prepared a place for us, thinking through every detail of our experience with Him. He knows our needs, our tastes, and our deepest desires for connection. The invitation He extends is not to a potluck but to a great supper where everything has been provided. He simply requests our presence, wanting us near Him, ready to enjoy the rich feast of His Kingdom that He has so lovingly prepared.
