Devotionals

Here are a few resources to guide your quiet time this week:

Day 1

What's Your Event?

Based off the message: Run to Win

Scripture

1 Corinthians 9:24 - Don't you realize that in a race everyone runs, but only one person gets the prize? So run to win.

Devotional

A high school track and field team is a fascinating collection of athletes. On one side of the stadium, you have sprinters exploding out of the blocks for a race that lasts less than 11 seconds. Across the field, you have someone launching a heavy metal ball in the shot put, relying on pure power. In the center, a pole vaulter uses a fiberglass stick to fly 15 feet into the air. Others are pacing themselves for a grueling two-mile run. They all wear the same uniform and score points for the same team, but their training, body types, and skills couldn't be more different.

This is the picture the Apostle Paul paints of the church. God has created a diverse team, and each of us has a specific “event” He has designed us for. Some of us are called to the sprint of public proclamation, others to the long-distance endurance of intercessory prayer. Some are built to “throw” resources with generosity, while others “jump” into action to serve. The problem arises when we start comparing ourselves to others, coveting their event because it looks easier, less demanding, or more glamorous. We trade our God-given assignment for a spot on the sidelines, content with simply wearing the jersey.

God isn’t just looking for passive participants; He’s looking for called competitors who will run their assigned race with everything they have. He gave you a specific set of gifts and a unique lane to run in. The success of the entire team depends on you doing your best in your event. It’s time to stop looking at someone else’s lane or lounging at the concession stand. God is calling you to get on the track and run the race He designed for you.

"We're a part of a team, but because there's diversity in the body, we all don't run the same event. Some people run. Some people sprint. Some people do long distance... But everybody has an event to participate in and your goal should be to do your best in the event that you have been assigned to." - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Reflection Question

In which areas of our lives have we chosen an easier 'event' because we were intimidated by the workload of the one God assigned to us?

Prayer

Father, forgive us for comparing our race to others and for opting for the sidelines. We confess that we have sometimes chosen comfort over our calling. Teach us to embrace the event you have assigned to us and to run it with all our might for your glory. In Jesus' name, Amen.
