Shift to Love Your Sheep Status
Based off the message: Sheep, Get Ready For The Shift
Scripture
My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. - John 10:27
Devotional
Our culture is obsessed with optimization. We track our sleep, our steps, and our screen time, all in an effort to 'max out' our potential. There's 'looks-maxing' to perfect our appearance, 'protein-maxing' for physical health, and even 'community-maxing' to combat loneliness. These trends, often pushed to extremes, reveal a deep human desire to improve, to become the best version of ourselves. We invest time, money, and immense effort into enhancing every corner of our lives.
But this drive for self-improvement can have a dark side. When taken to an extreme in our own strength, these habits can become harmful obsessions. We can chase an ideal that is always out of reach, leading to exhaustion and disappointment. We might try to fix our own brokenness with unverified methods or by chasing the next trend, only to find ourselves more isolated and unfulfilled than before. In our spiritual lives, this can look like tolerating our faith or even showing up to avoid guilt but secretly wishing we were something more powerful or independent, like a lion or a cougar, not a simple sheep.
Today we introduced a radical counter-idea: 'sheep-maxing.' Instead of trying to optimize our lives through our own fleshly efforts, what if we went to the extreme in our relationship with God? This isn't about hyper-religiosity or performing for God. It's about deeply, passionately, and radically leaning into our identity as His beloved sheep. It's a shift from tolerating our status to loving it, recognizing that being a sheep isn't a sign of weakness but a position of profound security and care under the watch of the Good Shepherd.
Unlike the harmful extremes of worldly 'maxing,' taking our relationship with God to the extreme yields only blessing. It means we stop looking to the left or the right for fulfillment and look only to Him. To 'sheep-max' is to embrace our dependence on the Shepherd who knows our name, understands our needs, and leads us to places of restoration and peace. It’s a call to find our ultimate identity not in what we can achieve, but in whose we are.
"I want you to shift from tolerating being a sheep or being in spiritual malaise to loving being a sheep" - Pastor Lindsey Upshaw
Reflection Question
In what areas of our lives have we been trying to 'max out' in our own strength instead of leaning fully into our identity as God's sheep?
Prayer
Father, forgive us for tolerating our relationship with You while pursuing worldly optimization. We want to shift from spiritual malaise to 'sheep-maxing' for Your glory. Teach us to love our status as Your sheep, finding our full identity and security in You alone.
