Something's Gotta Change: 5 Day Devotional

Here are a few additional resources to guide your quiet time this week:

Day 1: Breaking Free from Financial Bondage

Message: "Something's Gotta Change" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

When he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. - Luke 15:14

Devotional: Just like the Israelites in Egypt, many of us find ourselves trapped in financial bondage. We might be caught in cycles of debt, overspending, or financial decisions that don't honor God. The good news is that God desires our freedom - not just spiritual freedom, but financial freedom too. The first step toward this freedom is recognizing where we are and being honest about our situation. Sometimes, we need to hit rock bottom before we're ready to make real changes. But even in those moments, God is working to draw us closer to Him and show us a better way.

Quote: "Financially speaking, some of us are doing things that might be dishonoring to God." - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: What areas of your financial life feel like bondage right now? What steps might God be asking you to take toward freedom?

Prayer: Lord, give me the courage to honestly examine my financial situation. Help me recognize areas where I need Your deliverance and grant me the strength to take the first steps toward freedom. In Jesus' name, amen.

Day 2: Finding Your True Provider

Message: "Something's Gotta Change" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

After he had spent everything, he began to be in need... When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death!' - Luke 15:17

Devotional: In our financial struggles, we often rely on our own understanding, credit cards, or other temporary solutions. But God wants us to recognize Him as our ultimate provider. When we're in financial difficulty, it's tempting to look for quick fixes or continue harmful patterns. However, God sometimes allows us to reach points of desperation, so we'll finally turn to Him. This isn't about punishment - it's about redirection. He wants us to learn to trust Him with our finances, knowing that He cares about every aspect of our lives.

Quote: "Sometimes God will allow you to hit to rock bottom so that you can come to your senses." - Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: What sources of provision have you been relying on instead of God? How might God be calling you to trust Him more deeply with your finances?

Prayer: Heavenly Father, help me to see You as my ultimate provider. Give me faith to trust You even when it seems difficult, and wisdom to follow Your financial principles. In Jesus' name, amen.

Day 3: Embracing the Wilderness Season

Message: "Something's Gotta Change" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

I will set out and go to my father, and will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in your sight- Luke 15:18

Devotional

The journey to financial freedom often includes a wilderness season - a time of learning, growing, and preparing for better things ahead. This season might feel uncomfortable as we develop new habits and break old patterns. We might need to cancel subscriptions, create budgets, or make lifestyle changes. While these changes can feel restrictive, they're actually preparing us for greater freedom. The wilderness isn't a punishment; it's a training ground where God shapes our character and teaches us to trust Him more deeply.

Quote: "The wilderness represents a time of preparation for the promise."- Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: What new financial habits is God asking you to develop in this season? How might these changes be preparing you for future blessings?

Prayer: Lord, help me embrace this season of preparation and change. Give me perseverance to develop new habits and wisdom to learn the lessons You're teaching me. In Jesus' name, amen.

Day 4:

The Power of First Fruits

Message: "Something's Gotta Change" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
Honor the Lord from your wealth, and from the first of all your produce; Then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine. - Proverbs 3:9-10

Devotional

One of the most powerful principles in financial freedom is learning to put God first through giving. It might seem counterintuitive to give when we're struggling financially, but this act of faith demonstrates our trust in God's provision. Even with limited resources, we can practice generosity. This isn't just about the amount - it's also about our heart attitude and the principle of acknowledging God's ownership over everything we have. When we're faithful with little, God often entrusts us with more.

Quote: "Part of financial freedom is learning how to put God first."- Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: How might your perspective on giving change if you viewed it as an act of trust rather than an obligation? What's holding you back from giving consistently?

Prayer: Father, help me develop a generous heart that trusts You completely. Give me faith to put You first in my finances, even when it seems difficult. In Jesus' name, amen.

Day 5: Living in Financial Freedom

Message: "Something's Gotta Change" by Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.
And God is able to make all grace overflow to you, so that, always having all sufficiency in everything, you may have an abundance for every good deed - 2 Corinthians 9:8

Devotional

Financial freedom isn't just about having more money - it's about living with peace and purpose in our financial lives. It means making intentional choices about spending, saving for the future, and being positioned to bless others. This freedom comes from knowing our identity in Christ, not in our bank account balance. When we align our financial decisions with God's principles, we experience the joy of being good stewards and the peace of living within His provision.

Quote: "Your identity is not based on your net worth or your money mistakes; it's based on the fact that God has declared you righteous."- Pastor Dexter B. Upshaw Jr.

Question: What would true financial freedom look like in your life? How might achieving this freedom enable you to better serve God and others?

Prayer

Lord, guide me toward true financial freedom. Help me make wise choices that honor You and position me to be a blessing to others. In Jesus' name, amen.
